It’s not fair that Old Fourth Ward gets Field Day. There already are so many exceptional casual restaurants in and around the neighborhood and woefully few in so many other parts of town. We all know it’s the BeltLine’s fault, of course. That notorious restaurant hoarder is sucking up too much of the city’s culinary energy. In fact, a mere half-mile up the BeltLine, there’s another spot a lot like Field Day: Victory Sandwich Bar. Both spots have a hip, lived-in quality—the kind of places that breed regulars because it’s so delightful to hang out there. And both excel at the sandwich. But I think I like Field Day even more.

Otherwise, from now on, I’m going to want all my fries with luxurious accompaniments — like your dipping sauce setup of creme fraiche, trout roe and finely snipped herbs. I’m going to tsk tsk regular old cheeseburgers — and hold out for your Big Day double stack, slathered with jammy-sweet bacon agrodolce and topped with a perfect confit egg yolk. That sunny blob oozes on demand, making the gourmet sandwich more moist, more choice.

Funky Little Field Day Plans to Bring the Neighborhood Together on Highland Avenue
Field Day, the neighborhood bar and cafe owned by actor Rob Bouton of Charleston’s Queen Street Grocery, opens today on Highland Avenue in the Old Fourth Ward. It takes over the former Across the Street Mexican restaurant, and resides next door to Bouton’s neighborhood market, Everyday.

Rob Bouton, owner of Charleston’s Queen Street Grocery, has partnered with former Ford Fry employees Hanna Houle and Mike Pitts to open Everyday Market and Field Day restaurant and bar in Old Fourth Ward. The market opened a couple of weeks ago and currently offers local products like chips and coffee. Once the restaurant opens in January, the market will shift its focus to grab-and-go items made onsite, such as sandwiches, pasta salad, and quinoa salad.
